Wrappin' With Diane von Furstenberg
It's every designer's dream to create a garment that becomes a classic, but few fashion trends ever make it to that status. Coco Chanel did it with the black dress. Burberry did it with the trench coat. Then there's Diane von Furstenberg. In 1974, von Furstenberg created the wrap dress and sold an estimated five million of those robe-style, jersey dresses by the end of the decade. It's no surprise the comfortable yet classy dress saw a resurgence of popularity in the late 1990s, and today the wrap dress has joined the ranks of the little black dress as a staple in women's fashion. Von Furstenberg's empire now stretches beyond that iconic dress with a line of sportswear, accessories and home goods. Earlier this year, she launched a signature fragrance and celebrated the French launch last month at a Sephora in Paris by staging a flash mob. With Chaka Khan's “I'm Every Woman” blaring in the background, 100 models shook their stuff in, you guessed it, the designer's famous wrap dresses. We're not sure if she's got a flash mob scheduled for her Dallas appearance, but von Furstenberg will gladly autograph a bottle of her new fragrance, Diane, for you when she visits Sephora in NorthPark Center from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
