After they leave Saturday Night Live, most comedians can only trot out the same old comic persona for so long before the time comes to find a new gag. Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, Al Franken--all eventually reinvented themselves years after they left. Don't hold your breath for Jon Lovitz to do the same. The pudgy king of self-deprecating smarm has plied the same old gags clear through his late-'80s SNL years and into a brilliant, if one-dimensional, Hollywood career. For 25 years, he's spun whole new characters out of tiny adjustments to his lovable sleazeball: a cigar and fedora (A League of Their Own), a Hawaiian shirt (Rat Race) or playing the bumbling brother with a heart of gold (Trapped in Paradise, City Slickers II). Lovitz played two completely different characters in unrelated appearances on Friends, both of whom were sleazy stoners named Steve. His biggest dramatic turn might have come in a Subway ad selling sandwiches alongside Lil Jon. So it's anyone's guess which Jon Lovitz will turn up for his latest stand-up routine at the Addison Improv, 4980 Belt Line Road. He may do it with fat jokes, politics or luncheon meat--there's really no telling--but count on Lovitz to do it with sleaze. Tickets are $25. Call 972-404-8501 or visit improv.com.
