You Got My Mind Messed Up

Hauntingly beautiful and layered behind a scrim of hazy melancholy, Ted Kincaid’s images seem to capture a distant, mystical world. But what actually composes that “reality” is the debatable question. His famous Thunderhead Clouds begin as actual photos which are hyper-altered, manipulated and distorted. His newer pieces, which resurrect possibly haunted sailing vessels and nocturnal landscapes, are created under a different methodology, causing an illusion rather than a depiction. “Ted likes to say ‘If it looks real, it probably isn’t. If it looks fake, it’s probably real,’” says Beth Taylor, director of Talley Dunn Gallery, where Kincaid’s latest show, The Terrible Truth/The Beautiful Lie, opens on Saturday night. He’s mischievous in that respect, toying with perceptions of domestic versus foreign, the materialized versus the sublimated. Set your mind to “frappe” from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
