Ever since Doug Sahm passed away in 1999, there's been a Sahm-sized hole deep in the heart of Texas. Sir Doug was the consummate Texas musician, equally adept at country, blues, rock, conjunto and Western swing--combining all these genres into an innovative brand of music that sounded like nothing but Texas itself. His last band, the Texas Tornados, was a Tex-Mex super group with help from Sir Douglas Quintet keyboard whiz Augie Meyers, Norteño accordion master Flaco Jimenez and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" singer Freddy Fender. Now that Doug is gone, his son Shawn, a talented musician in his own right, is carrying on his father's legacy by performing on occasion with Jimenez and Meyers. While they're sure to perform plenty of their own material Friday at Sons, including the Meyers-penned Texas Tornados hit "(Hey Baby) Que Paso," the trio's set will undoubtedly be full of Sahm classics like "Mendocino" and "Nuevo Laredo," which is fine by us. Local country favorites Boys Named Sue kick off the fiesta.
