I love a good nap (who doesn't?), but Rip van Winkle-ing it for a century until some guy finally shows up for a make-out session rankles my little feminist heart. But who am I to argue the merits of The Sleeping Beauty? The Texas Ballet Theater is performing the classic fairy tale en pointe this weekend only at the Winspear Opera House. The ballet is set to Tchaikovsky's timeless score, which ranks among the most beautiful and chill-inducing music he composed during his career. The sleeping beauty is Aurora, a princess cursed by an evil fairy to die on her 16th birthday from a needle prick. Carabosse--said evil fairy--is thwarted by another fairy who alters the curse into a long snooze until Prince Charming arrives on the scene. Would that make Aurora the original cougar? Anyway, this fairy tale ends as they all do: happily ever after. Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, 2100 Ross Ave. Tickets are $19 to $109. To purchase, call the box office at 214-880-0202 or visit attpac.org. Visit texasballettheater.org for more information.
Fri., June 11, 8 p.m.; Sat., June 12, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sun., June 13, 2 p.m., 2010
