JFK went to Berlin and was inspired to proclaim himself a jelly donut ("Ich bin ein Berliner"). OK, he was actually trying to say he was a Berliner, and got the translation wrong. While the odds are good that Berlin won't inspire most of us to make an internationally quotable gaff, it's the kind of city that does pull great things out of people. The art show Berliner Geschichten (Berlin Stories) is proof. Whether they were inspired by the city's rich atmosphere, or by the fact that Berlin has survived everything from war to communism, the artists use their works to tell their stories of Berlin. They visited the place and pulled art out of the experience. Sure, that could be done someplace like Amarillo, too, but who wants to go there? Check it out through July 10 at Barry Whistler Gallery, 2909-B Canton St. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Call 214-939-0242 or visit barrywhistlergallery.com.
