A couple years back the Svalbard Global Seed Vault opened on an island off the coast of Norway, with the mission of preserving the world's important plant species in the event of global catastrophe. It's funded mostly by Norway, but also in part by the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an organization whose benefactors include the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation--let's just hope the seeds aren't as susceptible to viruses as my old PC...rim shot! Artist Dornith Doherty has visited several similar installations, including the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation in Fort Collins, Colorado, and England's Millennium Seed Bank, where she used X-ray equipment to examine and photograph the seeds. The resulting images were arranged into the striking designs that make up Archiving Eden II, the artist's new exhibit at the Holly Johnson gallery, 1411 Dragon St. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Call 214-369-0169 or visit hollyjohnsongallery.com.
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 17. Continues through Nov. 14, 2009
