What do Swatch watches, nude bodies and neon lights have in common? Aside from collaborative efforts in 1980s porn movies, the Conduit Gallery's current exhibitions. San Fran's Rex Ray offers New Works featuring his "designer" art that rips magazines apart and reassembles them (with a little paint) to create gorgeous organic, colorful and modern showpieces. Ray's work is often found adorning the occasional art-appreciating rock venue or Swatch watch (aha!) when it's not hanging in a gallery or museum. Heyd Fotenot challenges America's discomfort with naked time by painting his peeps on pieces of wood. His exhibition is titled Get Your Wood On, but exhibitionists should please remember: While you're in the gallery, it's a title and not a command. Alejandro Diaz lights up cultural stereotypes (literally) using neon and punny sayings ("Wetback by Popular Demand," for example). Together, it's a trio of shows that appeals to three of the strongest triggers of human reaction: beauty, sex and intellectual humor...kinda like that 1980s porn, now that I think about it. The Conduit is located at 1626 C Hi Line Drive, and hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Visit conduitgallery.com.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: June 13. Continues through July 18, 2009
