To refer to Super Diamond as simply a Neil Diamond tribute band is a gross understatement and a disservice to all involved. The San Francisco band faithfully performs a full range of mega-hits from the sequined troubadour's extensive song catalog, but they do so with the full blessing of the man himself. Neil has performed onstage with Super Diamond and has gone so far as to refer to them as his "adopted children." Can MiniKISS claim to have played "Cold Gin" with Ace Frehley on lead guitar? Even the most discerning of Diamond-heads could easily mistake Randy "Surreal Neil" Cordero's pipes for those of the real deal Neil. But perhaps Super Diamond's finest achievement is in how well they walk the tightrope inherent to performing an evening's worth of Neil Diamond songs, pouring on appropriate amounts of schmaltz while staying sincere enough to never descend into out-and-out parody. Super Diamond turns on their heartlight 9 p.m. Saturday at House of Blues, 200 N. Lamar St. Tickets are $15 and $25. Call 214-978-2583 or visit ticketmaster.com.
