Those of you who know downtown Dallas only during the work week probably think that a bike tour downtown is something less than a good idea. It's about as smart, maybe, as sewing your own parachute or chucking a tiger under the chin and saying, "Him's a big kitty, isn't he?" But trust us. We've done it, and riding the mean streets of downtown Big D isn't that bad if you pick the right time. That time is Sunday, before church lets out. Luckily, the organizers of Preservation Dallas' Celebrate Downtown! bike tour know this. Apparently, they also know that the real trick to riding a bike downtown is getting there alive down one of the busy streets that lead into it, which is probably why the tour starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Knox Street entry to Katy Trail and ends there at noon. The ride passes spots of historical interest, including Heritage Village at Old City Park, as well as the Arts District, Farmers Market and Dealey Plaza, among others. Tickets are $25 for Preservation Dallas members and $30 for non-members. Call 214-821-3290 or register online at www.preservationdallas.org. You must sign a liability waiver to ride, but don't worry, it's really not that bad. Just stay off McKinney Avenue. Those trolley tracks are a bitch.
