We all take notes or scribble things down from time to time, but when Annabel Daou does it, it's not on a Post-it note or napkin. She does it on a gigantic scale. Lebanese-born and New York based, Daou's America takes the written word and explodes it across the 20 sheets of paper that make her large 7-by-13-foot canvas. The words and phrases that make up America aim to describe the American experience. The text is taken from a variety of sources, from William Faulkner and Arthur Miller to The Ramones and George Bush or even from the artist herself. While individual phrases are recognizable, the full body of text forms a kind of chaotic landscape to be examined both up close and from afar. Marcelyn McNeil's Recent Works exhibition is being shown concurrently, featuring a body of artwork that is just as organic and chaotic as Daou's. McNeil's paintings feature bold shapes and figures that have been poured and dripped into existence. Some edges bleed and soil, while others are restrained, forming distinct edges and shapes. Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The exhibit runs through July 2. Call 214-939-0064 or visit conduitgallery.com for more information.
