Long erroneously depicted by Westerners as “evil,” the dragon is the metaphorical epitome of imperial authority, a symbol of good luck whose motto in the Chinese horoscope is “I reign.” This month, The Association of Oriental Arts at the Irving Arts Center asks you to channel your inner serpent at Year of the Dragon, an exhibition featuring paintings and flowers by members of TAO Arts and DFW Ikebana International. Symbolizing auspicious power — particularly over rainfall, floods and hurricanes — dragons are far more likely than Rick Perry to end this record-shattering, endless drought, and you can get in a little dragon-worship between Sunday and this year’s Chinese New Year on January 23. We’re especially excited to see flower arrangements by Sally Shockey, meticulously depicting the august creatures, and you can see for yourself at 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. in Irving.
