Drummer Alvin Fielder has one of those origin stories that makes your jaw drop, having played with the likes of Sun Ra and Kidd Jordan. His technique is something to behold as well, bobbing and weaving and defying gravity. Most recently, he collaborated with Oak Cliff free-jazz patriarch Dennis Gonzalez on 2011's Resurrection and Life, and on Saturday, he goes back to his Houston roots with a quartet rounded out by players Dave Dove (trombone), Jason Jackson (sax) and Damon Smith (double bass). Gonzalez's Yells At Eels opens the night, one that should be a positively electric one for Texas jazz.
