Trees, once hailed as one of the meccas of Dallas live performance, has yet to return to its former position of glory in its latest incarnation. But Friday night's Rusko show, brought to you by local promoter Feezy Duz It, definitely lends credibility to the venue, bringing the club its first major dance music event since the venue reopened last summer.
Ask anyone who was lucky enough to catch this UK-born producer/DJ at the Lizard Lounge earlier this year: Rusko is a game-changer. He helped take dubstep from the ultra-dark, ultra-serious extreme and became one of the factors behind taking the genre beyond its grimy origins in urban UK. He also helped to orchestrate a more rhythmic and upbeat approach to the genre, while at the same time staying faithful to the intense bass wobble that many of the genre's most avid fans will cite as the unifying soul of dubstep.
At the end of the day, though? Rusko is simply fun. The wild-eyed 25-year-old producer's personality is accurately portrayed in the energy of the music he produces. And his live performances continue this trend, as he showcases an exuberance behind the turntables that's rarely seen in the world of live DJ shows.
Now a member of the Diplo-founded Mad Decent camp, Rusko's star only seems to be on the rise, with his debut full-length O.M.G. due out this May. In addition to that, some of his production will also be featured on the new M.I.A. album. Stay tuned for more big things from this young man.
