Kwanzaa, day five, is a celebration of purpose. The accompanying lesson is a lovely one, focused tightly on unity and movement, combining under a shared goal to exert efforts forward for community improvement. There are celebrations all over the city during these seven days, but some of the most interesting, meditative and structured are anchored to our favorite South/East Dallas space, Pan African Connection (828 Fourth St.). And today is no exception. The study of purpose happens in two parts: the first half celebrates the day with a formal ceremony through dance and music, beginning at 2 p.m. at St Luke Community United Methodist Church (5710 East R L Thornton Freeway). The next is a combination of panel and group discussion scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pan African. Local music industry talents and execs will come together to tackle the topic “Culture as a Weapon In our Struggle: Music and Revolution,” and discuss hip hop’s transformational nature and ability to unite. Knowing the passionate support of this cherished venue, I wouldn’t be surprised if some big names show up. Visit panafricanconnection.com for the full week’s events.
