The horromance. The ever-blustery settings. The centuries-old habits and dialogue. Everyone still loves vampire movies, right? Let’s be honest: That Twilight bullshit kinda effed up the whole vampire genre for everyone, forcing even the most respectable Dracula or Anne Rice fan into hiding until Edward Cullen stopped gleaming in the sunlight. But last year, director Neil Jordan (Interview With the Vampire) went for a different sort of vamp story with Byzantium. The mother-daughter thriller, starring Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan (and is that Jonny Lee Miller? Yes, indeed) is less “this town has an unspoken agreement about our relationship with wolves and teens” and more “this town cannot find out we drink blood. Oh shit, they found out.” And it’s worth a watch if you thought the only blood-sucking worth paying attention to was on premium channels.
