Talk about bang for your buck: Where most theater treats you to one solid piece of play writing, Kiss Me Kate gives you layers of it. The Cole Porter masterpiece takes on two separate but kind of intertwined romances, a dose of ’40s-era gangster drama and an entire Shakespeare production as part of its play-within-a-play shtick. The musical focuses on a production of The Taming of the Shrew that’s dramatic for all the wrong reasons, plus more Cole Porter hits than you can shake a stick at, and a Shakespeare primer, all for the price of one show. And if you’re up for a bit of feminist rage, that comes with the price of admission, too. Try to swallow your bile as our heroine sings “I Am Ashamed That Women Are So Simple.” But, still, Kiss Me Kate has so much to give ... especially when it’s performed at Artisan Center Theater’s amazing theater-in-the-round at Belaire Plaza, 420 East Pipeline Road in Hurst. The production runs through October 12, with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. matinees on select Saturdays. General admission tickets are $14 Mondays through Thursdays, and $16 Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets are available at artisanct.com.
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays. Starts: Sept. 9. Continues through Oct. 4, 2013
