Most of the time my inbox is filled with boring invitations to big vineyard wine dinners, press releases about a restaurant's seventh new menu and announements for new creations at Taco Bell. So when I got an email from Katharine Shilcutt, the food critic at our sister paper Houston Press, I got excited. The subject line read:
oh shit, son...
and then in the body:
you're in for some amazing fucking kolaches:
She then added a link to this short Dallas Sun article that covers the opening of our first area Kolache Factory:
Kolache Factory has opened its first Dallas-Fort Worth location in Plano. The Houston-based company features pastries filled with meats, cheeses and fruits. The Plano store is at 1217 Coit Road and is open seven days a week, but only until 2 p.m.
Schilcutt went on to admit there are those who don't share her high praise for the pastry franchise because the kolache dough is too sweet or that some of the stuffing choices are weird, but she's obviously a fan. And based on the scores of locations that dot the Houston area, she can't be alone in her opinion.
Their website says the Plano location is open, but they're not picking up the phone and the mailbox is full. Sounds like it's time for a weekend kolache excursion.
Anyone been?
