Last weekend the White Rock Local Market held its third annual Chili Cook-off. The judges for the event included BBQ Snob Daniel Vaughn, The Ticket's Corby Davidson and Matt Tobin of Goodfriends.
Jason Dreubert made a cabrito rojo chili, which won for best spicy chili and people's choice award. Team Chili Nelson (an ode to the octogenarian) won for best booth design, which makes us wonder if they just sat back and enjoyed the scene. A team called "Nature's Life Preserver by Dr. Ben" won the best traditional chili and wild card went to The Good Stuff by The One Percenters.
The event raised more than $1,500 for a White Rock Local Garden in East Dallas, a project that is expected to open this summer. The idea of the community garden is to hold classes and workshops for both kids and adults. They also hope to be able to grow produce for the WRLM and local restaurants. And, of course, it will be an organic garden.
The sizable plot was donated by a local company (details to be released later) and Sara Perry with the WRLM explained that a big purpose of the community garden is to support a Sprouting Healthy Kids after-school program with DISD. Perry and others with WRLM are traveling down to Austin in a few weeks to visit with a group there that already has the program in place. They hope to learn more about the particulars of the project and how to teach the important concepts of sustainable, local food to school kids in an educational setting.
