No. 11: Emapanadas at La Carreta Argentina

The delicious tiny pastries called empanadas can be served as a main course, but typically they are appetizers and party food in Argentina. The pastry is filled with various meats, cheeses and vegetables and baked or fried for a moist crispness that melts in your mouth.

The empanadas at La Carreta, located near the Bishop's Art District in Oak Cliff, are without a doubt one of the city's best version of the South American dish. There, you will find a few of our favorite empanadas, filled with spicy beef or spinach, hard boiled eggs and ricotta cheese. Another favorite is made with blue cheese and ham.

Each empanada costs about the same as the average taco but can be packed with more flavor and is much easier to eat.

In addition to having fine empanadas (and other great Argentine dishes), you can enjoy the blazing sounds of a Latin jazz harpist each Tuesday evening, something you won't find in many places around town -- if any.
