Gig Alert: Change Of Plans at Dan's With Slaven's CD Release

J. Paul Slavens, Denton's goofy improv song and jazz man, is set to release his new full-length album, Alphabet Girls, this Saturday, June 26, at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton.

Though Slavens made the album available for digital download earlier this month, Saturday will celebrate the physical release of the disc with performances from Slavens, as well as from Joel North (the Sleep Whale member will be performing as his solo entity, Northern) and Burntsienna Trio.  

This is somewhat surprising, though: Originally, Slavens wasn't booked to headline his own release. Gutterth Productions was planning on hosting one of its live showcases right after Slavens' set, somewhat eclipsing him with the following, completely unrelated, lineup. Lucky for Slavens, and for his improv fans, Gutterth has since canceled. Now Slavens will perform second in the night with songs from his new disc, and will close the affair with his improv comedy, making up songs on the spot guided by audience suggestions.  

Courtesy of this cancellation, Saturday will offer Slavens a proper release party and also a unique chance for the audience to see both of Slavens's sides--the silly improv man, and the only-slightly-less-silly musician and composer.
