The Nicotine Fits, The Kansas City Faggots 10 p.m. on Friday, May 23, at Bar of Soap
There were only a handful of bands I could really get behind when I was still writing and working in Colorado Springs. The Nicotine Fits were one of them--and I totally blanked that they were gonna be in town tonight until just now. They're really a pretty great punk act (and, yes, they have a phenomenal name) that's worth checking out, if only because they make up for their lack of height with barrel-loads of intensity. If you're looking for a punk rawkin' good time, you could do far worse than seeing these guys flop about the stage area at Bar of Soap tonight.
Strawberry Fields presents Denton Deluxe 9 p.m. on Friday, May 23, and Saturday, 24, at Rubber Gloves, Denton
We told you a few weeks back about the Denton Deluxe discs the Strawberry Fields guys had up their sleeves, but we didn't know that they'd be doing this. This two-night show's got a pretty incredible combined lineup. You can see the whole thing here, but the obvious highlights are RTB2, Fight Bite, Florene, Nouns Group, Zanzibar Snails and Eat Avery's Bones. But it begs the question: Do these Denton bands ever get sick of playing with one another for the same crowds? Venture outside of the comfort zone, guys! C'mon, now.
Sarah Jaffe, Telegraph Canyon 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, at Club Dada
I caught Telegraph Canyon a month and a half ago or so at Dada and their intricate indie pop rock was quite the treat. It's not music to rock to so much as it's music you go see so you can listen. Same goes for superstar-in-the-making Sarah Jaffe. I got the chance to hear some of the tracks off her upcoming EP recently and them's some impressive songs, man. This is a nice, low-key pairing, where you won't have to give much energy, but you'll get a lesson in beauty sent back your way in waves.
