This weekend's biggest show will give local music fans a good reason to get outside: On Saturday, Homegrown Music & Art Festival will feature performances from Neon Indian, School of Seven Bells and a handful of other bands with local ties at Main Street Garden Park in downtown Dallas. Before you go, check out Cory Graves' breakdown of the event, and make sure you put on your sunscreen.
But if you're like me, and SPF 75 just isn't enough, we've got plenty of indoor shows this weekend, too, starting with the ones we've been talking about all week.
Tonight, The Backsliders will be at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton, along with RTB2 and The Demigs, and Jessie Frye will be at La Grange in Deep Ellum. Meanwhile, Zoe Keating and Tiger Darrow will be at the Kessler Theater.
On Saturday, Oil Boom will be at the Kessler Theater, celebrating the release of their new record Black Waxy with the help of headliner The Beaten Sea and Dovetail.
And on Sunday, Mogwai, and opening act Errors, will blow the heads off of the audience at Granada Theater.

The Boom Boom Box, Garbaj Kaetz, Darktown Strutters, Unconscious Collective
Friday, May 13, at Pastime Tavern
The Boom Boom Box is a sort-of-supergroup made from great Dallas bands of yesteryear. Sure, Baboon and Pleasant Grove are largely inactive these days, but when the members of The Boom Boom Box get together, the end result is an intense, hard-hitting rock offering, complete with a stellar light show. This show will also offer a nice chance to see Darktown Strutters who've been mostly quiet for the last few months. Not counting last week when I said the same thing.

Friday, May 13, at Lochrann's Irish Pub & Eatery
It's a good thing that Lochrann's doesn't have a marquee out front -- they'd need extra letters tonight, thanks to these two bands that happen to have longest names in Dallas music. And people give I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness a hard time...

I guess it's the time of the year for people to start listening to the feel-good bluesy rock of Los Lonely Boys again -- you know, before your hopes of having the best summer ever are dashed by the oppressive heat and a public pool dunk master.

Before I could even get around to watching the first episode of The Voice on my DVR, Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse sent out a press release saying that they had one of the show's contestants booked for this weekend. And if you like Rebecca Loebe as much as Maroon 5's Adam Levine or Christina Aguilera did on the show's inaugural episode, then you should book it to Uncle Calvin's. If not, keep calm and carry on.
Vinyl Fantasy
Friday, May 13, at Inwood Lounge
At the Inwood Lounge in the Inwood Theater, DJ's Emptycylinder and Business Casual will draw from their extensive vinyl collection of Smooth Psych, Funk, Garage, and Soul. On the event's Facebook Page, DJ Business Casual addresses the fact that it will take place on Friday the 13th. "It's a scary time for all of us, but I'm guessing your nerves will be soothed by the sweet sweet sounds of our favorite jams," he writes. "Especially if you like vinyl crackles. They're like bath salts for your ears."

Of all the shows this weekend, this concert is most likely to give you a contact high. It's also where you'll be most likely to get accosted by a reggae-loving frat boy.
Fatty Lumpkin, Melody Memory
Saturday, May 14, at City Tavern
Fatty Lumpkin possibly has the worst name in rock 'n' roll, local or otherwise. They will, however, be playing at the Homegrown Festival afterparty at City Tavern, so they've got that going for them.
Matthew And The Arrogant Sea, Record Hop, The O's, Dust Congress
Saturday, May 14, at Hailey's Club
This show features a strange pairing of all-over-the-map acts from all over the Metroplex. Matthew And The Arrogant Sea will bring the indie rock, Record Hop will get all crunchy, The O's will bring their brand of country (and probably buy a round for the bar) and Dust Congress will keep things quiet.
Armin Van Buuren
Saturday, May 14, at Lizard Lounge
Dutch-born DJ Armin Van Buuren has been well-received since the start of his career, and now he's a bigger deal than ever before in the world of electronic music. And, this Saturday at Lizard Lounge, he'll be doing his thing for what we can only assume will be a packed room.
Peopleodian, Shiny Around The Edges, Midday Veil
Sunday, May 15, at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios
If, for some reason, you find yourself in Denton on Sunday night looking for a show, your best bet will be at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, where Seattle's Midday Veil will support two of Denton's best. Shiny Around The Edges has always been known for its avant-garde fare, and Peopleodian will close out the night with its synthy soundscapes.
