Seems like only six months ago (because it was) that First Baptist Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress was still casually referring to Mormonism as a "cult." Back then, that word choice earned him a round of appearances on various TV news shows to explain himself.
But at that point, of course, Jeffress was endorsing Rick Perry. With Perry out of the race, and with no apparent sense of inner conflict, Jeffress cheerily appeared on Fox & Friends yesterday to endorse the man he'd once described as being part of a "false religion."
"I haven't changed my tune," Jeffress said. "In fact, I never said Christians shouldn't vote for Mitt Romney. When I talked about his theology, I was answering a question about his theology. And I still maintain there are vast differences in theology between Mormons and Christians, but we do share many of the same values, like the sanctity of life and religious freedom."
Jeffress didn't deny making the "cult" comment, but now says he never told evangelical voters not to vote for Romney.
"I never said the quote that you attributed to me," he said. "There was a spurious article in one magazine that just completely fabricated that quote. I've never said don't vote for Mitt Romney because he's not a Christian."
Glad we've cleared that up.
