Tuesday morning our city’s prayers were answered by none other than the elite and Texas-based booking company Scoremore who posted a photo of their own on Instagram announcing an October 29 concert date for Lamar’s select tour at the South Side Music Hall. Tickets for the event go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. over at scoremoreshows.com.
Lamar’s show at the South Side Music Hall will be his first show in the area in two years, as he last performed in at the area at Verizon Theatre in the summer of 2013 with the whole TDE camp. This time around only Jay Rock of TDE will join him on the tour. Lamar’s no stranger to the South Side Music Hall, though. He played the 1,500-person room on Halloween in 2012, just nine days removed from the release of the enormously successful album good Kid, m.A.A.d city.
The room must harbor some great memories for Lamar because the venue is anything but intimate, which was one of the descriptors he, or his manager, used in the initial Instagram post. But when you’re used to headlining festivals and selling out stadium across the country, a venue like the SSMH probably feels small. But intimate would be more accurately attributed to a venue like the Kessler or Granada Theater—we could only dream of a setting that intimate, and if J. Cole’s $1 show at the House of Blues was any indicator it’s probably best a swarm of ticketless fans isn’t crashing those smaller venues. Nonetheless beggars can’t be choosers.
While we’re teasing Lamar about his announcement a more apt description of the tour would be The Inaugural Kunta’s Groove Sessions, considering an annual is an event that occurs once every year, which is yet to be the the case. With this being the first of hopefully many upcoming tours, inaugural would be the best word choice for the wordsmith.
Lamar’s show will be surely be awe-inspiring. Considering the direction he moved toward with To Pimp a Butterfly it probably wouldn’t be too surprising to see him perform with a full-band to pull off the rich, soulful and jazz stylings of the album.
