In this week's DFW food news round-up, Dallas restaurants make even more national best-of lists, local restaurants expand with new locations and some Dallas chefs make high-profile moves:
  • Southern Living released its list of the South's best new restaurants this week, and two Dallas spots made the cut: Rapscallion and The Theodore. "Stepping into The Theodore feels like entering a fantastical movie set, one designed by a Teddy Roosevelt-obsessed Wes Anderson circa 1901," Southern Living says about The Theodore. The magazine describes Rapscallion chef Nathan Tate as a "hulking Texas boy." "This being Dallas, Tate has developed a vigorous dry-aging program, with primo cuts of beef on display in a glass-front case behind the bar. (He’ll grill them over pecan wood.) Tate is part of a new generation of chefs who truly understand the beautiful possibilities inherent in any Southern favorite."

Houston's Foreign Correspondents and Helen Greek Food and Wine and Austin's Laundrette also made the list.

  • Sylvan Thirty, the West Dallas mixed-use development across from the Belmont, is getting another addition, CultureMap reports: Betty Ringer Ice Cream. "The man responsible is Stephen Smith, founder of Nib Chocolates," Teresa Gubbins writes. "It's going into the empty space next to art gallery Iota, and it will offer ice cream, along with some of Smith's well-known confections, including his signature caramels. Construction on the shop — which is named for two of his pets — has just begun, with an opening scheduled in time for the 2016 holiday season."

  • Dallas taco writer Jose R. Ralat, founder of the Taco Trail, has signed a book deal. American Tacos: A History and Guide to the Taco Trail North of the Border will be the product of an intensive two-year foray into the American taco landscape with photos from Dallas photographer Robert Strickland. The book, to be published by University of Texas Press (known for their often Texas- and Southern-centric food books), will "explore the regional differences of tacos that have developed and are developing north of the border."

  • The beloved New York gourmet grocer Dean & Deluca is coming to Plano, CultureMap reports, in the Legacy West mixed-use development in Plano. The store is slated to open in early 2017.

  • Also coming to Plano: a third location of Pakpao, Apheleia Restaurant Group’s Thai-inspired concept that already has locations in the Design District and Preston Hollow. The restaurant, located at 3310 Dallas Parkway between Eatzi’s and the Cinemark Theater, will host a grand opening Sept. 9.

  • Changes keep coming for the Hotel Crescent Court: Charlie Rushton has been named executive chef, according to a press release. "In this role, Rushton manages culinary operations for the 220-room Lone Star Landmark and five of its restaurants and bars, including the lively lobby lounge, Beau’s; The Conservatory, enclosed by glass and peeking out into the famed courtyard gardens; Spa Café; Crescent Gourmet & Starbucks; and the exclusive, members-only Crescent Club – located on the 17th floor overlooking the dazzling Dallas cityscape."

  • The Cedars Social has a new executive chef: Justin Box, formerly of Fearing's, Cafe Momentum and Restaurant Ava. Box will introduce his new fall menu Sept. 23.

  • In major Fort Worth news, HG Sply Co., the Lower Greenville restaurant specializing in responsibly sourced, paleo-friendly eats and excellent cocktails, is opening at 1621 River Run, in the mixed-used development, WestBend, on Aug. 22. Perhaps the best news of all: The new location will feature "a 7,000-square-foot patio overlooking the (Trinity) river and trails, which will open in the coming months."

  • Lakewood's got a new Mexican food option: Meso Maya opened its latest location at Mockingbird Lane and Abrams Road, GuideLive reports. It opened Aug. 15 and currently serves lunch and dinner.

  • Whole Foods is coming to Fort Worth this fall, according to a press release. The new location will anchor the Waterside development at 3720 Vision Drive. "The 45,000-square-foot store will be the company’s first Fort Worth location and its 13th in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and will employ approximately 120 team members," according to the release.
