  • Canary by Gorji

    Canary by Gorji

5100 Beltline Road Dallas, TX 75254
972-503-7080 Over the years, chef-owner Mansour Gorji has transformed Canary Café to a little eclectic spot to a white tablecloth-though still casual-destination focusing on steak and Mediterranean specialties. Despite his Iranian background, he probably understands Texas steak better than anyone. Oh…it's also one of the few fancy places that would dare serve calf fries. A must visit. More >>

  • City Tavern

    City Tavern

1402 Main St. Dallas, TX 75201
214-745-1402 This is an easy-going restaurant and bar that loves a good rock show. While the menu, beginning with lunch, doesn’t stray too far from the normal pub-grub choices (e.g., fish and chips, burgers, gigantic stuffed jalapeños), a po-boy and a pulled pork sandwich are also available. Customers can enjoy $3 drink specials or beer-and-a-shot pairings. Don’t be surprised if owner Josh Florence is the bartender serving it to you. Arriving before 10 p.m. is your best chance of snagging a table to take in the tunes from a long roster of bands on a Friday night. Thanks in part to the amiable staff, its well-worn wood decor and a kickin’ soundtrack, this joint oozes a neighborly vibe. More >>

  • Cool River Cafe

    Cool River Cafe

1045 Hidden Ridge Road Irving, TX 75038
972-871-8881 Las Colinas is known as a part of town where business happens. Top executives from all over the country travel to this section of North Irving to buy, sell, merge and do all sorts of other businessy things. And when the day is done, many of these tycoons can be found seated at the richly appointed wood bar at Cool River Cafe. But you don't have to be fluent in business jargon to earn a seat at the bar. Folks from the surrounding North MacArthur neighborhoods fill Cool River Cafe as well, drawn to its wide selection of beers and delicious food. A massive screen lines a far wall, eliminating any trace of a bad seat in the house, and the scotch and cognac menu invites you to flex your wallet muscles, no matter how big or small. More >>

  • Cooper

    Cooper's Restaurant and Club

2424 S. Cockrell Hill Road Dallas, TX 75211-8102

The bar's advertisement in Latin Life Magazine isn't kidding when it claims, "Now looking for new members!" Longtime members of the club and friendly bartender Jose will make sure you feel like a regular too. Cooper's--featured as one of "Dallas's Most Authentic Dive Bars"--has been at its current location at the corner of West Illinois Avenue and South Cockrell Hill Road since relocating from West Davis Street in 1983. The CD jukebox reflects the diversity of the neighborhood and clientele, with a random assortment of discs from Freddy Fender, Vicente Fernandez, AC/DC, Al Green, Robert Earl Keen, Rolling Stones and Johnny Cash. Thursday-night karaoke is similarly mixed, Jose says, with regulars choosing blues, country, rock and Tejano from a comprehensive Internet playlist. The laid-back approach to repair in the men's room is evidence of the easy-going manner of the joint, with tiles missing and the toilet tank lid replaced with a whitewashed piece of plywood rather than porcelain. There are signs, however, that not everyone in the place is always so friendly, as a couple of fist-shaped holes scar the inside of the door. Above the broken wood, some anonymous wag wrote, "Don't hurt me, I'm only a door." More >>

  • Cowboys Dance Hall

    Cowboys Dance Hall

    2540 E. Abram St. Arlington, TX 76010
817-265-1535 Cowboys is a supermarket-sized country and Western bar, live music venue and honky-tonk, and it's designed to accommodate large crowds. Good thing, because it's located less than two miles south of Cowboys Stadium, The Ballpark in Arlington and Six Flags Over Texas. That means the place attracts many post-gamers and out-of-towners looking to experience a small slice of Texas. The bar comes complete with cowboys and cowgirls, boot scootin' and beer drinkin' and, naturally, a mechanical bull. There's a large stage in front of the huge dance floor located in the center of the club -- it's usually filled with folks two-stepping and kicking up their boots. And there are plenty of pool tables for wallflowers. Enormous lava lamps on the counter add a cool vibe to a few of the bars. More than half a dozen bars and beer stands are scattered throughout the venue. There's plenty of parking out front. More >>

  • Crazy Horse Saloon

    Crazy Horse Saloon

    508 S. Elm St. Denton, TX 76201
940-591-0586 Crazy Horse Saloon & Dancehall is in the corner spot in a strip shopping plaza less than a mile outside of downtown Denton. Its website describes the 5-year-old saloon as a "honky-tonk college bar," but the saloon's drink specials, pool tables, dance floor and bar stools seem to attract more of a cowboy and biker crowd than the college bars closer to the square. There's a large hardwood dance floor surrounded by plenty of seating. Crazy Horse hosts karaoke on Tuesday and Thursday nights and live local bands, ranging from country and Western to rock 'n' roll, every Friday and Saturday night when they charge a $5 cover for 21 and up, and a $10 for under 21.
