  • Starbucks

5631 Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway Dallas, TX 75240
    972-386-0753

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Dallas / Fort Worth and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores. • Whole Foods Market Preston Forest

    Whole Foods Market Preston Forest

11700 Preston Road Dallas, TX 75230
    214-361-8887

http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com The parking lot of this grocery store is typically jam-packed with Mercedes and BMWs, a sure sign that you’re about to enter the fancy-pants organic world of Whole Foods Market. This location isn’t the largest in Dallas, but an in-house bakery, meat and seafood counters with a focus on naturally raised and sustainable products, a fresh juice bar, an impressive international array of cheeses, an ultra-fresh salad bar, a huge selection of prepared foods, a massive (albeit pricy) produce selection and plenty of bulk bins ensure one-stop shopping for all the well-heeled neighborhood folks who flock here. The store also sells vitamins, supplements and personal care products, because sometimes you just need five different scents of goat’s-milk soap. An olive bar and a sushi counter round out the offerings and make it entirely too easy to drop a couple stacks on just one or two shopping bags. More >>

  • Yumi to Go

    Yumi to Go

5000 Belt Line Road Dallas, TX 75254
    972-239-9864

http://www.yumitogo.com/index.php Specializing in quick service (and rapid-fire delivery) with dishes that dot the Asian Continent, Yumi To Go is cute and modern, with a pastel color scheme. The cuteness extends to the food. Plates are bestowed with names like "pao wow chicken" and "how fun noodles." The restaurant is so sure of its kitchen and food, visitors to the website can watch Yumi To Go's cooks in the kitchen via a grainy webcam. Among the $6.99 lunch-special options is yumi chu chicken, one of the spicier dishes served. It's worth noting that by spicier we mean just a wee bit hotter than tame, not Szechuan, burn-your-tongue-off, hallucination-inducing spicy. Just a bit more mouth warmth to add to the heat index.
