Dive into bleak tales, stark stories and treatises on the dark nature of humanity as part of your preparations for Halloween. That may not sound like a rollicking good time in and of itself, but rest assured: There are drinks. The Hemingway Book Club pulls up a barstool at Black Swan Saloon (2708 Elm St.), orders a round and then immerses itself in The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. Sip on a beverage and discuss a few of the more sinister musings from Baltimore’s OG raven. Selections include “The Pit and The Pendulum,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” There’s no charge for admission.
