Historic African American Film Series

The Dallas Public Library, J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, Fine Arts Division has organized a film series celebrating African American cinema history using archival films from the Tyler, Texas Black Film Collection within SMU’s Hamon Arts Library G. William Jones Film and Video Collection. Wednesday nights in October from 6pm-8pm the Library will screen a different film from the collection in the auditorium. The Denton Black Film Festival and The African Film Festival will have informational tables set up by the auditorium to share more about Black filmmaking. On Sunday, October 30th from 3pm-5pm the historic Texas Theatre will present the final film in the series with a special screening of Thom Andersen’s 2015 film short 'Juke' which is based on the archive. There is a vintage movie poster art contest for youth with entry forms available at participating locations. Guest judges from the African American Museum, Fair Park and South Dallas Cultural Center will lend their expertise to choose the winners. Jerome Pumphrey, a designer for The Walt Disney Company, has created an original poster representing the iconic archive!
