Space...The Final Art Scene

Imagine you are putting on a spacesuit, not only preparing physically, but mentally. We've all seen Apollo 13 and Armageddon, so we get the gist of what being an astronaut entails...right? Like a lot of other people in Dallas area, the closest I can get to a space shuttle would be to watch a Hollywood blockbuster--unless I take a trip down to Houston. If driving four hours seems far-fetched, the Irving Arts Center offers an exhibition this fall in celebration of 50 years of NASA. Through November 22, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services presents NASA|ART: 50 Years of Exploration. The exhibition features 72 original works including drawings, photographs and sculpture. Visitors can expect work ranging from illustrative to abstract by artists as diverse as Annie Leibovitz, Norman Rockwell and Andy Warhol. From 2 to 5 p.m. each day, families can also enjoy screenings of the Discovery Channel documentary When We Left Earth and the Smithsonian Channel's Into the Vault series. The Irving Arts Center is located at 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. Parking, tours and screenings are free and open to the public. For more information, call 972-252-ARTS or visit irvingartscenter.com.
