Idle Rich Pub

2614 McKinney Ave.
Dallas, TX 75204
214-965-9926
Website
Turns out the term "Idle Rich" has a double meaning, as it is a slang name for beggars in owner Feargal McKinney's native Ireland. In the case of the bar, it's a coy way of saying all are welcome. That was indeed the case on a recent visit. There were millionaires, sure--both the real deal and the $30,000 version. But there was also a guy sporting a foot-tall mohawk who didn't get a second glance. The menu lists a few fancy-pants items like pate and the aforementioned cheese boards, but there's plenty of meaty, deep-fried and greasy grub too: calamari, cheese fries, burgers and fish and chips. In fact, such stomach-coating fare is pretty much all that's available after 11 p.m. Steamed mussels were a highlight--largely due to the accompanying "frites" (French fries in American) and spicy mayonnaise. The beer and whiskey selection is extensive, with even premium offerings reasonably priced. Added bonus: the menu's helpful and occasionally smart-ass descriptions. Example: "Corona-Miles away from unusual." The crowd tends to be somewhat douche-friendly. But the music--Pixies, Nirvana, Pavement, Beastie Boys and the occasional contemporary indie-rock hit--will drown out their inane conversations. And the food makes it more than worthwhile.

...and everyone is closed. We watched for cars as we drove down McKinney. There is was "the Idle Rich Pub". We were pleasantly surprised to find real food - a huge burger and mussels - and some crazy vodka, gingerale and lime drink that came in sweating copper cups. After a few drinks and a few games of darts we happily staggered home.
