Dating to 1938, Lakewood Theater is a little piece of history right smack dab in the middle of Lakewood. Its red, green and blue neon sign soars 100 feet in the air, shining like a beacon for more than 60 years. The theater retains all of its original Art Deco charm, including just a single movie screen. In its past life it played host to some top artsy films, but these days you’re more likely to find a racy burlesque show hosted by a drag queen, a midnight screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show, live jazz or even a comedian. Forget popcorn or stale nachos -- Lakewood has a full bar so patrons can get their booze on while they get their burlesque on. Gin and tonic, anyone? In the summer of 2012, the iconic neon sign was destroyed by a wicked hail storm, but it was painstakingly restored to its original majesty thanks to plenty of support from the community.
The Lakewood Theater is Dallas' sole remaining single-screen movie palace in anything resembling its original condition. Still showing films, still entertaining audiences, the Lakewood draws audiences from a wider geographical area, to watch a wider variety of entertainment choices than ever before. The Lakewood Theater is located at 1825 Abrams Parkway in Dallas, just a few minutes from downtown Dallas and a short drive from most area locations.
