It's difficult to get more on the nose than a name like Vietnam Restaurant, but the Old East Dallas joint isn't aiming for fancy-pants allure. Pho (pronounced Fuh) rules at this large, crowded establishment owned by the Ly family since 1997. Its success is owed largely to the restaurant's proximity to hospitals as well as to downtown and Uptown businesses with workers looking for something on the cheap. The lunch buffet includes traditional Vietnamese dishes like goi tom thit (shrimp and pork salad). But, again, pho is king, with such traditional examples as pho tai nam (rare beef with flank steak). Adding to the authenticity, family members bring back herbs and vegetable on visits to the home country.
