Take a room full of chefs and ask them what they love to eat when they're not at work, and you might get a similar menu to that of Village Kitchen in Highland Park Village. Chef Andre Natera has scaled back the glitz to embrace homey comfort food that has a decent chance of making a kid out of you. The burger is a big, messy affair, and you should spend the two extra dollars to get the "VK" version with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and chunks of bacon, all held together with mayonnaise flavored with even more bacon. It’s not health food, so make it a splurge day and wash it down with a milkshake, too. If you want to a more stylish dinner, you can opt for the steak frites, or seared salmon or a massive pork schnitzel, but the dishes that taste the best are often the most relaxed. Pecan Lodge brisket-topped flatbread, anyone?
