Could The Black Eyed Peas Be Your Arlington-Hosted Super Bowl XLV Halftime Performers?
That's the rumor being floated around the Internet at this very moment--that the Black Eyed Peas will be your halftime performers at Super Bowl XLV, which (I'm sure you don't need to be reminded) is being hosted at Arlington's Cowboys Stadium at the end of the 2010-2011 NFL season.
But let's just hold our horses here for a second: The people that initially reported the matter acknowledged that they couldn't get confirmation on the matter, even after hearing it from a "source." And, at the time of this writing, no one else has confirmed it either.
We've tried here at DC9 to get to the bottom of it, too, but neither the band's publicist, the NFL's publicist nor the head of the North Texas Super Bowl Committee is currently available for comment, so we too are in the dark.
Or are we? Take this as seriously or as dismissively as you want, but when we told the person who answers the phone at the North Texas Super Bowl Committee why we were calling, she seemed rather taken aback at the notion.
"I'm pretty sure that's false." she said.
Then again, she admitted that she doesn't know for sure. Like everyone else, it seems, she's just gotta feeling. But, for now, we can all exhale in relief.
Update at 4:50 p.m.: Just got word from NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy on the matter. Only, well, it doesn't necessarily change anything: "Our comment," McCarthy says, "is that we have no comment."
Which, well, isn't a denial. But, at the same time, without saying as much, McCarthy did pretty much say that all this talk might be pretty premature. While acknowledging that there's no set timetable for Super Bowl halftime performer announcements, he did say that last year's announcement didn't come until October, and that the year before's announcement didn't come until around Thanksgiving. So we're probably just ahead of ourselves, thank the lord.
