DC9atNight's Locals Only! With Whiskey Folk Ramblers, Kirby Brown
Here's a dirty little secret: The local music rallying cry is the same in every city. "There's so much talent here!" fans of local bands everywhere whine to the barely listening masses. "If only people would start supporting the scene, then it could grow!"
Ugh. Words like that are cloying even in print.
But, see, here's the thing: The Dallas-Fort Worth-Denton scene actually has a good deal of support going for it these days. Just a few years back, it would've been damn near impossible to find a local band that could sell out any venue bigger than the Double Wide. Now there are plenty of them; Sarah Jaffe, Telegraph Canyon, Ishi and True Widow are just a few of the local headliners drawing legit crowds to large venues around the region these days.
Face it: Things are strong to quite-strong in the local music scene these days. But sure, they can always improve, too. So, on that note, we've created this new concert series called "Locals Only!" The concept is simple: Each month at the Jack Daniel's Saloon in the Gilley's complex on South Lamar Street, we'll throw a party featuring performances from two local acts worth your while. And we'll give you a couple incentives to stop by—drink specials, ticket giveaways, that sort of thing. Oh, and it won't cost you a penny to attend these parties.
And considering the amount of talent amassed on our debut bill, that's quite the steal. Newcomer Kirby Brown, who'll perform with a full band at this show, smartly mixes heady lyricism and a Britpop influence into his roots-rock offerings. And Fort Worth's Whiskey Folk Ramblers, maybe the best live band in town, craft an intoxicating blend of Western noir and Gypsy punk into their rip-roaring, good-time offerings.
Doors open at 8. We'll see you there.
