Hipster types have unfairly maligned the Deftones for their supposed role in helping foment the stain that was nu metal. But, hey, can the group help it if so many Korn imitators really liked their stuff?
The band's 2000 watershed crossover album, White Pony, still holds up as a testament to the fact that progressive, heavy music can sometimes boast broad appeal without dumbing down. The latest Deftones disc, Diamond Eyes, is further proof. Critics and fans are eating it up, and the album even penetrated the Billboard Top 20.
