Gerard Dirkx Says Possible Telefones Reunion in the Works
Since The Nervebreakers reformed and played a gig this past April, it seems fitting that Dallas' other great new wave/punk band of the late '70s/early '80s, The Telefones, do the same.
Via email, one-time Telefones frontman Gerard Dirkx says he has been asked by the fine folks at the Lakewood Theater to get the old band back together--but it's not yet a done deal.
"There are still a lot of loose ends to tie up," writes Dirkx. "Up until last night, I thought it was confirmed for October 9, but it's hard to get everyone to agree on any date. It's tentatively us and five or six other bands from various eras of the Dallas alternative music scene, including Spector 45 and some others."
There are even some rumors that the aforementioned Nervebreakers may take part as well.
For those DC9 readers not as advanced in years as Robert Wilonsky or myself, the Telefones was one of the first and best alternative bands to come out of Dallas. Ever.
Gerard (back then known as Jerry) and his brother Steve released two albums (Vibration Change and Rock-ola) that still sound as invigorating today as they did 30 years ago.
The thought of the Dirkx brothers performing "The Ballad of Jerry Godzilla" and "Sign of the Times" once again is definite mind candy for those who understand the impact the Telefones had on the Dallas music scene.
But Dirkx warns everyone not to get their collective hopes up too high just yet: "It's been moved three times now, with one of the bands always having a member or two that can't make the date. I started off enthusiastic about it--it sounds like it could be a real fun night. It's a bit bogged down now, but I'll certainly keep you updated."
Thanks Jerry--I mean Gerard. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
