Gig Alert: Ace McNeely Memorial Concert Set For Saturday Night at City Tavern
As anticipated, City Tavern will remember fallen sound engineer Ryan "Ace" McNeely with a memorial concert set to take place on Saturday night at the downtown establishment, starting at 9 o'clock.
McNeely died Tuesday afternoon after spending much of Monday in an Austin hospital on life support, suffering from injuries sustained after falling off a cliff late Sunday evening.
Originally, City Tavern's stage was to feature a performance from and Grant Jones & The Pistol Grip Lassos, for whom McNeely played bass, on Saturday night. For obvious reasons,t hat show won't go on.
In its stead, the venue will host what McNeely's close friend and bandmate, Grant Jones, is calling a "remembrance jam." The show will feature performances from many of the recently deceased's close friends in the Dallas music community, among them Chris Holt, Madison King, Greg Schroeder, Brent Engel and Jones. McNeely's father, himself a musician, will join those performers on stage.
"His dad is a phenomenal musician," Jones says. "Ace fell right of his tree, basically."
Jones expects another, full-band rock act to be added to the bill, as well. (We'll let you know once that act has been confirmed.)
"Country and acoustic and lovey-dovey songwriting is cool," Jones says, "but Ace deserves a rock show."
The event is free to attend and open to the public.
