Joe Pug Tells Us The Songs He'd Love To Cover One Day, Shares Some MP3s
Back in July of last year in the paper version of DC9, we stated that folk troubadour and musical entrepreneur Joe Pug "devised a strategy for marketing himself that simply wouldn't have been possible only a few years ago." We were talking about the Internet, of course -- and in the blogosphere, to be more specific.
And we stand by that assertion: Pug, a Chicagoan that has used not only his talent, but his hard-earned notoriety to tour the world with well-known artists such as Steve Earle and Josh Ritter as an opening act, is now the headliner in his own tour that will take him around North America for the next few months. Still trekking in support of his sublime 2010 release, Messenger, Pug is once again showcasing his ability to reach out to the fans and create a little buzz for his current tour.
Recently, Pug and Strand of Oaks' Timothy Showalter, whose band will function as Pug's opener for a while, took the chance to cover their favorite songs from the other's catalog -- both of which are available for your downloading pleasure after the jump.
But we thought it would also be fun to hear what other songs that Pug -- a guy who writes the vast majority of his own material -- would possibly like to cover on a future album. So, in advance of his Saturday night show at The Loft in Dallas, we asked him. In response, Pug sent us a list of few of his "cover wish picks" and his reasons for why. Check out the list -- and the free songs he passed along, after the jump.
The Louvin Brothers -- "When I Stop Dreaming" :: One of the reasons this song is so beautiful is the brothers singing harmony. When it comes to singing, nothing sounds better than blood on blood. Wish I could do this song, but I don't have a brother.
George Jones -- "The Grand Tour" :: I have this soft spot for George Jones that cannot be easily explained. His voice and his phrasing make this song devastating. As soon as you try to sing it yourself though, it's a total schmaltz-fest.
Gillian Welch -- "I Dream A Highway" :: It would be great to get on stage for an encore, announce that you're going to do a cover, and then play all 15 minutes of this beautiful song.
Rivers Cuomo -- "Waiting on You" :: This was a lost gem from the blue album days. I heard a full-band demo of it once. It would be fun to give it a shot, but power-pop isn't really my strong suit.
