Welcome to My First Show, where we
give bands a chance to talk about the first shows they ever attended --
no matter how uncool and embarrassing those tales may be.
T.J. Prendergast of Maleveller has played drums for a variety of acts over the years -- Sons of Sound, Pegasus Now and Salim Nourallah, to name a few.
But it's the mighty four-piece Maleveller that shows his inner metal core. The band's debut EP came out with a bang last year, and plans for a proper full-length are on the horizon. We expect it to blow the chillwave off your turntable.
Earlier this week, in advance of his band's gig at the Double Wide on Saturday night with True Widow and Garuda, T.J. took some time to tell us about the first show he saw -- Metallica, no less -- as well as Maleveller's first show.
What was the first show you ever saw? Were you with your parents?
My
first proper show was a Metallica concert in Providence, Rhode Island, when I was 15. It was me and my younger brother, Nick, and we were dropped
off by a pair of worried parents. Our young minds were totally blown --
we screamed along to every song and I managed to tape-record the entire
show.
What was the first show you saw with your own money?
It
was either Rush during the Roll the Bones tour or Danzig during the How
the Gods Kill tour with Kyuss opening. It would have been in '92, since
that was the year I had my first job.
What do you remember about Maleveller's first show? This was after the band had been together for a while, correct?
Our
first show was in June 2009 at The Bike Haus off Lower Greenville, which
was graciously given to us by our friends in Vorvadoss, who were also
on the bill (opening for touring band Witch Hunt). Being a house show,
the atmosphere was more relaxed than a club gig, but I still had
first-show jitters. By this point, the band had been writing and
rehearsing material for a whole year, so we were as ready as could be,
and the show went well. Thankfully, our friends came out to cheer us on
and boost our confidence.
