Over the Weekend: Lower Greenville Block Party
Missile tests the new road on their sweet bikes
Since moving to East Dallas two weeks ago, I'd heard many a tale of what Lower Greenville used to be, what it should be, what it is now, what it could be. The facelift it received -- mainly in the form of a newly paved road -- apparently took a while and, therefore, took its toll on local businesses. It's all part of the community-building jigsaw, I suppose. Still, I couldn't help but feel the streets were a little empty for Saturday's block party, as were many of the storefronts.
I made my inaugural visit to Good Records to catch one of Dove Hunter's rare performances, but just missed them. Good thing I had rows of music to get obsessively compulsively lost in. A couple hours later, I awoke from my stupor, wiped the drool from my chin and walked on.
I just couldn't stomach watching the wing-eating competition at Greenville Pizza, so I wandered over to Zubar, a venue I would never wander into, to catch New Fumes.
I'd really enjoyed what I heard from Daniel Huffman's 2011 Good Records LP, Bump and Assassination. Live, the whole concept became even more impressive. The man versus machine multimedia aspect of what he's doing requires, I'm guessing, at least four different parts of the brain to be tuned in and turned on. Same goes for the listener. It's pop music via newly paved electronic avenues.
Plus, he started his set with a psychedelic rendition of the theme song to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Too bad the folks at Zubar weren't necessarily feeling the volume. I mean, it's a dance club, right?
On to Billiard Bar for Missile, who made good use of the space and fist-pumping punk anthems, which no one was asking to turn down. Apparently this weekend's block party was just a soft opening for the real block party, scheduled for spring. I'm pulling for ya, LG.
