Bob Schneider is one of Texas' most singular songwriting voices. He's a deft ballader and an occasionally unsettling wit, an artist with a discography sampling nearly every style of music his home state is known for.
His most recent album on Dallas-based Kirtland Records, Burden of Proof, comes with an ambitious video project: One clip for each song. These music videos have premiered on various media outlets in the months since the album's release, and today DC9 at Night and the Dallas Observer present the fifth one, a visual for "Hop On The World," directed by Jason Whitbeck.
The video, a romance set in Dallas, gave Whitbeck a chance to show his view of his home city. "I think my view of Dallas is different from a lot of people's," he says. "I wanted to showcase my side of town, the places I like to go to."
Whitbeck is a veteran filmmaker here, having directed videos for Smile Smile ("Truth on Tape") and clips for the likes of The Polyphonic Spree, the NBA and Samsung. He worked with Schneider to develop the idea for the "Hop on the World" clip, and they shot it this May.
"It's Bob Schnieder. He's a really interesting character, which was maybe a little intimidating at first," says Whitbeck. "But it was good to get his feedback. It was a great experience."
