On Sunday, a group of tight-knit area musicians gathered at the as-yet-unopened (but gorgeous--got a tour last night) Kessler Theatre in Oak Cliff to pay tribute to their fallen friend, Tommy Atkins, the bass player for The Great Tyrant, who died late last week. Included among the performances held on Sunday evening was the above collaboration between Great Tyrant frontman Daron Beck and former Jetscreamer leadman Will Kapinos on the song "I Put A Spell On You," which, as you can see, made for an unexpected and surprisingly touching tribute.

Area music fans will recall the song as the one Beck memorably auditioned with for season four of American Idol. In other "I Put A Spell On You" news, Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan and a cast of friends (among them, oddly enough, Johnny Depp) recently released a rendition of the song as a download in which the sales proceeds will be donated to rebuilding efforts in Haiti.

Meanwhile, an official wake for Atkins has been set for this upcoming Sunday at Lola's Sixth in Fort Worth, starting at 8 p.m.
