Woodie Guthrie pre-show with Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines, Ronny Elliot, Don Conoscenti
One is unlikely to find a more varied sampling of roots music than this crowded bill at Uncle Calvin's. Serving as a preview for The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival that takes place in Okemah, Oklahoma, July 11-15, this performance features recognizable names and others that should be. Maines' claim to fame is that of a producer, but his guitar and composition skills are of equal renown. Maines' most recent production credit is The Spiritual Kind, the forthcoming Terri Hendrix release. For over a decade, Hendrix has been one of the best singer-songwriters to emerge from the Texas Hill Country, and that's really saying something. Ronny Elliot's musical roots go all the way back to 1964 and a Tampa-based garage band called the Raveons. Decades later, Elliot is now fronting Ronnie and the Nationals, an acclaimed Americana act whose fifth effort, Valentine Roadkill, is considered by many to be a seminal roots release. Add in multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/activist/New Age healer Conoscenti and the breadth of Guthrie's influence and continued relevance is made abundantly clear. Catch this show and then head north for a massive dose of real America.
