We're still waiting for Preservation Dallas's list of endangered properties -- that should be ready by the end of the month. But till then, it has announced the winners of its Eleventh Annual Preservation Achievement Awards, which will be doled out May 21 at the Kalita Humphreys Theater and which were selected by "an independent jury of preservation professionals" based, like the most-endangered list, on nominations.
One of the winners sits directly across from Unfair Park HQ: the old Parkland Hospital, home of ever-sprawling Crow Holdings; and the 2010 Craftsmanship Award goes to the reconstruction of Tenor and Contralto sculptures at Fair Park -- your favorites, if I recall correctly. In fact, Fair Park gets quite a bit of attention this year, receiving nods for Rehabilitation of a Historic Landscape or Park (the Esplanade and Parry Avenue Gate Restoration) and Rehabilitation/Adaptive Use of a Commercial, Institutional, or Mixed-use Property (the Texas Discovery Gardens)
The full list of award-winners follows. And while most are familiar names, PD sends the details concerning the lesser-known winner in its Rehabilitation or Adaptive Use of a Residential Historic Property category: a house at 311 N. Edgefield Avenue in Oak Cliff:
The main goal of the rehabilitation of 311 N. Edgefield was to restore the house to its original 1919 Craftsman charm. This included straightening all the badly misaligned exterior and interior walls to make the house square and updating the structure with modern-day necessities-plumbing, electric, and HVAC. The project participants wanted to make the worst house on the block the most outstanding one, while subtly incorporating modern amenities behind stylist Craftsman features. The sunken foundation was elevated up to 12 inches in some areas. Rafters were supplemented and reinforced in the ceiling to eliminate the swaying roof. New wood novelty siding and Craftsman-style casing were added where necessary to match the home's original features. New sheetrock was placed throughout the entire home, followed by new Arts and Crafts styled woodwork, designed to mimic that of other Craftsman homes in Winnetka Heights.
Preservation Dallas Announces the Winners of Its Eleventh Annual Preservation Achievement Awards
(DALLAS, TX--May 12)--Preservation Dallas has announced the winners of its eleventh annual Preservation Achievement Awards. Katherine Seale, executive director of Preservation Dallas, made the announcement. The awards will be presented at the awards ceremony and celebration on Friday, May 21 at the Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Kalita Humphreys Theater at 3636 Turtle Creek Boulevard from 6-8 p.m.
An independent jury of preservation professionals selects the award winners from nominated properties.
