Entering next month's NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys have needs. At safety. At kicker. At offensive tackle. And, yes, at receiver.
But are the concerns there enough to take a receiver with their top (27th overall) pick?
I think that decision became a little more clear yesterday.
I know, in a perfect world Kevin Ogletree continues to progress, Martellus Bennett chooses substance over style, Sam Hurd re-appears and Jesse Holley blossoms into Jerry Rice. If not, who's the Cowboys' No. 3 option behind Witten and Austin?
Williams, despite last year's nightmare, says it's him. In a juicy Q&A with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill, Williams says a lot of what we want to hear (taking responsibility) and some of what we don't (comparing himself to, um, New York Yankees' Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera).
Q: There has been a lot of talk about how the Cowboys can use you better. What do you do best?
A: Contrary to popular belief, I still think I have two of the best hands in the league. There are certain routes I run good - in routes, post-breaking inside routes, out routes and anything in the red zone. I felt like Mariano Rivera in the red zone. I felt like the closer. Even in the bad season I had, I had seven touchdowns because of my work in the red zone.
Meanwhile Bryant, the talented kid from Oklahoma State who was suspended most of last season for lying to the NCAA about his relationship with Deion Sanders, will have dinner with owner Jerry Jones tonight before arriving at Valley Ranch tomorrow for a private workout interviews with the Cowboys. He needs to do better than yesterday, when an uninspiring workout for NFL teams in Lufkin included him running only a 4.52 40-yard dash and slipping five consecutive times on the shuttle agility drill and blaming it on his shoes.
So if Bryant slips to No. 27 do the Cowboys take him? Or are there more pressing needs?
