It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's the Whole Cast of DTC's Superman Musical!
The Superman Family: Patrick Cassidy on Smallville back in 2003
The Official Press Release isn't due from Dallas Theater Center for about another hour or so, but why wait when Playbill's already got a sneak peek at the cast list for DTC's forthcoming (re)production of It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman, which opens June 18 at the Wyly. The biggest news: Patrick Cassidy -- son of Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy -- has snagged the role of Max Mencken, which his dad played in the original Broadway production in '66. And: Patrick's also been on Smallville, playing Lana Lang's daddy. And: Before that, he appeared on three episodes of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. So this was kinda inevitable.
DTC has already announced who's playing Superman and Clark Kent: Urban Cowboy Matt Cavenaugh. Zakiya Young, who appeared on Broadway in The Little Mermaid, will play Lois Lane. Cavenaugh's real-life wife, Jenny Powers, will play the other girlfriend: Sydney Sharp (not, one assumes, to be confused with the Dallas attorney of the same name).
We'll post the full cast list when it arrives, or you can get it from Playbill. DTC artistic director Kevin Moriarty is on vacation this week; we'll have more from him next week concerning the production, which could be a big deal as DTC hopes to revive the critically maligned show -- which was co-written by an Oak Cliff native son, Oscar-winning writer-director Robert Benton, who will most likely come to town closer to its debut date -- and, who knows, take it back to Broadway.
Update at 4:30 p.m.: The full release from DTC follows.
