The local paper says details about Dan Rather's move to Mark Cuban's HDNet are forthcoming; we say, why wait? No, seriously. Today's Philadelphia Inquirer has a lengthy story on the subject, including interviews with both the 74-year-old former CBS newsman and the almost-48-year-old Dallas Mavericks owner, who claims to be "more open-minded" than Rather's former bosses, to which we'd add, Ya think? During the interview with Gail Shister, Rather's voice apparently quavered as he spoke about why he's still kickin' around this business after decades in danger zones, including behind Walter Cronkite's old desk. Says Rather:
"Journalism has given me everything I've got, including my dream. I think I still have something to give back. I spent a fair amount of my life with something to prove - that I might not be the smartest guy in the room, but I could become a legitimate, world-class reporter, with heart and guts. I'm humbled and honored to have this kind of opportunity, at this stage of my career. I will give Mark Cuban hard work, loyalty, and the most fearless, high-quality journalism possible."
The story also provides the nitty and gritty of Dan Rather Reports, which debuts in October. There will be a staff of 10-20 in New York, it will resemble as much an interview show as a 60 Minutes-style shindig and feature pieces from such places as Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq. And there's also some background about how the men met--over Good Night and Good Luck., about when CBS mattered. This also marks the first time in history Rather will appear on a network with a travel show starring girls in bikinis, ultimate fighters and me. Good night and good luck. --Robert Wilonsky
